Using the OBIEE Sample Application with the Teradata Database

The OBIEE Sample Application is a fully functioning OBIEE environment available on a VM.  It is self-contained in that demo applications can be run against data stored on the VM.  It is possible to modify the VM so that external data can also be accessed and shown in a demo or used for testing.  This article shows how to modify the VM to access a Teradata database.  Almost any Teradata database version will work with OBIEE, but see the certification matrix for supported versions.

Install and Configure

    • Configure the VM so that it is on the same network as the Teradata database
    • Start the VM so that it boots the OS
    • Start a terminal window and su to root (the passwd is contained in the Oracle directions)
    • Download and install into the Sample App the Teradata ICU, GSS and ODBC drivers.  Follow the Teradata installation procedures especially with the order of installation (ICU -> GSS -> ODBC).  The install command for each file will be: rpm -ivh --nodeps *.rpm
    • Edit the Oracle ODBC.ini file on the VM located in the following directory:

For V406: /app/oracle/biee/instances/instance1/bifoundation/OracleBIApplication/coreapplication/setup

For V511: /app/oracle/biee/user_projects/domains/bi/config/fmwconfig/bienv/core

    • Add the appropriate odbc entries.  For example:

[ODBC Data Sources]

AnalyticsWeb=Oracle BI Server

opss_datasource=DataDirect 7.1.4 Oracle Wire Protocol

biplatform_datasource=DataDirect 7.1.4 Oracle Wire Protocol

HiveDSN=Hive ODBC

ImpalaDSN=Impala ODBC

TD14.10bridged=Teradata

[TD14.10bridged]

Driver=/opt/teradata/client/ODBC_64/lib/tdata.so

Description=Teradata Database

DBCName=192.168.0.203

Username=dbc

Password=dbc

Database=dbo

 Start up the OBIEE stack as per the Oracle directions.  Once up and running this completes the VM modifications.

Modifying the OBIEE Metadata

In order to access data from Teradata, the OBIEE metadata needs to be updated.  This is done with the “OBIEE Administration” tool.  Following are instructions on where to get the install files in order to run the configuration.

Install the client tool

To modify the sample app metadata a client tool is required.  This is a windows based tool call OBIEE Administration.  This section shows how to install the client and open the metadata on the sample application for modification.  The following steps need to be done on a windows machine that is on the same network as the Sample Application VM and the Teradata database.

    • Log in and go to the Home page:

OBIEE 12c has a new homepage.  For the V511 version this is what is displayed:

    • Download and install the OBIEE Administration tool (this is a windows client tool). Accept the defaults for any prompts.

Add the ODBC DNS entries

Two ODBC entries are needed.  The first will be used to access the OBIEE repository.  The second will be used to access the Teradata Database

    • First create an ODBC entry in Windows to access the repository.  The driver will be “Oracle BI Server-Oracle_Home”:

    • Enter the Name and Server address.  Make sure there are no spaces in the Name:

    • Enter the login, password and port for the BI server. The port number varies by Sample App version.  V511 uses port 7792.

    • Now create the second ODBC entry (also in Windows).  This entry points to the Teradata database.  There is a very tight naming convention for this DNS.  The odbc name must be named the same as the entry in the Sample Application VM ODBC.ini.  In this example TD14.10bridged was added to the Sample App ODBC.ini file.  So the ODBC entry added to windows should also be TD14.10bridged.

Running the client

    • Start the OBIEE Administration client
    • Open the online repository

    • You should now be able to import the metadata from the TD database.

Building out the business and presentation models as usual will allow you to query the data using Analysis, Visual Analyzer and the other BI components.

Hi,

Do it work for 607 too?

It should.  I haven't tried it yet.  The paths and ports may have changed, so it make take a little effort to configure.
