Aster Database support in Teradata Studio Express 14.02

Teradata Studio Express 14.02 now supports Aster database connectivity. Teradata Studio Express is an information discovery tool for retrieving and displaying data from your Aster database systems. It can be run on multiple operating system platforms, such as Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX. It is built on top of the Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) which allows Teradata Studio Express to benefit from the many high quality Eclipse features available while focusing on value-add for the Aster database. Teradata Studio 14.02 is available for download.

Overview

Teradata Studio Express is bundled with the Aster JDBC Driver 5.0.3, allowing users to connect to their Aster database and run SQL statements. A Connection Wizard is provided to help users easily create connection profiles for Aster database.

Once connected, the Data Source Explorer provides a hierarchical view of Aster database objects such as Database, Schemas, Tables, Columns, Constraints, Indexes, Views, and Map Reduce Functions. Users can also filter the list of schemas, tables, and views.

The Data Source Explorer provides right-click menu options on tables to Edit, Load, Extract, or get Sample Content.

A SQL Editor is provided for users to enter and execute SQL statements. SQL Templates are provided to assist users with the syntax for common SQL commands. Result set data is displayed in the Teradata Result Set Viewer, providing options to move, sort, and filter columns, export result data as text, XML, HTML, CSV, or Excel file format, and print result set data. SQL execution history information for Aster connections is stored in the Teradata SQL History.

SQL Templates are provided for standard SQL statements, such as CREATE, INSERT, UPDATE, as well functions such as nPath. You can open a SQL Editor window for your Aster Database connection and enter CTRL+SPACE to display the list of templates.

You can page down the list or enter the template name, such as 'nPath' to see the nPath templates. Once you have the template displayed, you can TAB from keyword to keyword within the template.

Teradata View support is also provided to display more detailed information about Aster database objects. Database information is provided, such as the list of Schemas, Users, and Roles. Additional information is displayed for Map Reduce Functions, Tables, and Views.

Map Reduce Function display provides details about the MR Function, such as its description, usage syntax, and input and output columns.

Table display provides information about columns and column data types, indexes, and constraints.

Conclusion

Teradata Studio Express 14.02 is available on the Download Site.  Aster connection support is also provided in Teradata Studio and Teradata Plugin for Eclipse.  Additional information is provided in the Teradata Studio Express article.

Re: Aster Database support in Teradata Studio Express 14.02

The Aster Client Tools package Readme mentions that it includes an ODBC Driver. It is available on the Download page.

Re: Aster Database support in Teradata Studio Express 14.02

Hi, I'm running an Aster query (from the tutorial) and get prompted for parameters because the query contains three "?":

select * from npath

(on (select * from overlap WHERE c1 in (1,2))

partition by c1 order by c2 mode (overlapping)

pattern ('A?.B?.C?')

symbols (c2='a' as A,c2='b' as B,c2='c' as C)

result(first(c1 of ANY(A,B,C)), accumulate(c2 of ANY(A,B,C))));

Running it on the Queen node in act works perfectly, but "fails" in TD Studio Express not even if one naively tries to "escape" the ? with \? .... could it be that the parser has a problem distinguishing between TD SQL and Aster queries?

Thx

Re: Aster Database support in Teradata Studio Express 14.02

@mersenne127, The problem is that there is not an Aster parser that we can use to distinguish the pattern clause versus parameter substitution. We will look at a fix for this. Thanks for you post.

Re: Aster Database support in Teradata Studio Express 14.02

@mersenne127, We have resolved the issue in our 14.10 release by ignoring question marks inside the pattern clause. Studio and Studio Express 14.10 are available for download on DevX Download link.
