ALTER TABLE and transient journal

Hi,
I need to rename a few columns of a very large table, with close to a billion rows. So, does using ALTER TABLE to rename the column names require Transient journalling (in which case the ALTER TABLE wouldn't be recommended).
Pls let me know.

Thanks.

Re: ALTER TABLE and transient journal

Renaming a column impacts only the dbc dictionary records so you shouldn't have any issues.

Re: ALTER TABLE and transient journal

Alter table does use the transient journal to log dictionary and table header changes, but these are very low volume. It does not, under any circumstances, log changes at the data row level. Even in the case of adding or dropping a column, a special technique is used that does not require row level logging.
