Benefit of collect stats on non-index columns

I was wondering what is the benefit of collecting statistics on Non-Primary Index and Non-Secondary Index columns. Isn't the search on this column always full table scan even if stats is collected on this column?

Thanks for your time.

Sunil,
I think that the stats are very useful to the optimizer in join conditions with this column(s) and the redistribution in spool space. For example the optimizer re-distribuites the smallest table depending on the 'fresh' stats.
