CHARACTER SET LATIN versus CHARACTER SET UNICODE

Hi All,

I would like to ask for your help on explaining and elaborating the difference between columns having data types set to LATIN and those set to UNICODE.

Currently encountering a spool space issue when joining the tables. I have checked the datatypes of the joining columns and found that these columns have Char datatypes individually been set to latin and unicode. Checking the explain plan, I'm constantly seeing keywords such as "(TRANSLATE((COL 1 )USING LATIN_TO_UNICODE))= COL 1").

How does a data type set to LATIN differ from a data type set to UNICODE?

Does having one column set to LATIN joined with one column set to UNICODE contributes to maximum CPU usage thus creating a spool space issue?

I would gladly appreciate if you could shed some light on this one.

Thanks!
