Performance of Not Exists and Exists over Not IN and IN operators

Performance of Not Exists and Exists over Not IN and IN operators

Its been mentioned in several documents that Exists and NOT Exists are better than IN and NOT IN operators in terms of performance.

(Im not referring to problems that might occur with NOT IN if there are null values)

I would like to know the reason behind it.

Is it due to correlated queries coming into picture when we use Exists operators?? or is it due to soem other reason?
