SQL assistant Vs Bteq Session on result/usage of Format function.

Hi,

I an new to teradata and understand my question might be not interesting for many. However at this time this is really giving me a hard push on my head.

I understand that SQL assitant can suppress the format for date/time values. However, I am trying to get some simple output not involving these datatypes.

SQL Assitant

============

select 'Hello' (format 'XXXX') col1, 'Heeello'(format 'X') col2;

OUTPUT:::

    col1    col2

1    Hello    Heeello

BTEQ

==============

select 'Hello' (format 'XXXX') col1, 'Heeello'(format 'X') col2;

select 'Hello' (format 'XXXX') col1, 'Heeello'(format 'X') col2;

 *** Query completed. One row found. 2 columns returned.

 *** Total elapsed time was 1 second.

col1  col2

----  ----

Hell  H

 BTEQ -- Enter your SQL request or BTEQ command:

===================================================================================

Question: Why does the output differ for these two sessions? does this have any implication on the scripts developed using sql assistant vs bteq?

Is it something like ODBC does not support format functions!! but bteq does??
