If it's in a shell script then it is a so-called 'here document' (and you should find '!@!' some lines below).

Its used to indicate the end of that bteq inside a shell script.

for ex:

bteq << !@! > $LOGFILE 2> $LOGFILE

.LOGIN ****

sel * from ***

.LOGOUT

!@!

u can use any character instead of !@!.
