Virtual Network Computing (VNC) is a graphical desktop sharing system that uses the RFB protocol (remote framebuffer) to remotely control another computer. It transmits the keyboard and mouse events from one computer to another, relaying the graphical screen updates back in the other direction, over a network.
Here we describe a simple procedure to show how to connect to a DBS from a client by VNC software.
Install VNC Server in Remote Server
The VNC Server is installed by default in Linux. You can verify this using the following command.
TDExpress14.0_DBS:~ # rpm -qa | grep vnc
If there is no output, VNC Server is not installed. You can download one from the following link.
If you have a good network connection between the DBS and the client, you can change the default graphical session to get better display.
Edit the file ~/.vnc/xstartup, and add the below 2 lines at the beginning.
unset SESSION_MANAGER exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
Note: This command can be executed by users who have the privileges to access the network. It means we can execute vncserver command by a common user (eg. vnc_user). As a result the VNC client will be logged in his/her desktop (vnc_user's desktop, not root user's).
If this is your first time running vncserver, you will be asked to set up the VNC remote access password.
After the password setup complete, you will get a window number. In this case, the window number is 1.
Step 2. Connect to VNC Server
Startup the VNC Viewer in client machine, and enter the Server's IP address plus the window number obtained in step 1 (192.168.196.131:1).
Note: The VNC server's IP address is 192.168.196.131, and the window number is 1.
Because the connection is not encrypted by default setting, we would get a warning window for the unsafe connection. Just click continue.
An Authentication window comes up. Input the password set up in step 1 and click OK.
The connection will be established.
1. How to customize the VNC client window resolution
Execute vncserver command with the -geometry option. For example:
vncserver -geometry 1600x1200
2. How to Kill a VNC server
Execute the following kill command with the window number.
vncserver -kill :2
3. How to Reset the VNC password
If you forget the VNC password, execute the following command to reset the password.
The easy setup is completed. You are now ready to connect to the remote DBS by VNC.
