Teradata DBMS is in bad state in TD Express 12 images (40GB as 1TB)

Hi
I have just downloaded TD Express 12 images (40GN and 1TB) ( Teradata Release & DBMS 12.00.02.07)

Both has the same problem right from the beginning :
Logon is possible but when I am trying to create any table, I get the error message :
*** Failure 3620 Cannot create nonfallback table 'ALAIN' with AMP down.
Statement# 1, Info =0

When I am doing some checks with ampload, I get :

Vproc Rel. Node Msg AWT Availability
No. Vproc# ID Count Count
----- ------ ------ ------- ----------------
0 1 1-01 0 50
1 2 1-01 0 0

a vproc is in a very bad state. Confirmed by doing a vprocgdo :

Vpr: VprocID Clq Type Movable NodeID Vdisk CUA HGID Slot Status Err
0: 0 0 1 Y 0 -1 -1 -1 ONLINE N
1: 1 0 1 Y 1 -1 -1 -1 FATAL N
2: 16383 0 2 Y 001-01 -1 -1 1 1 ONLINE N
3: 8192 0 3 N 001-01 -1 -1 1 1 ONLINE N

Both images were badly setup with some reference to teradata network in /etc/resolv.conf as well as mounting points on some computers in Teradata network making me think these image were kind of 'internal usage' only.

This is confirmed by the fact that the virtual image for TD Express 13 (40GB) is much better : everything is OK from start.

Main problem is that TD 12 is much more frequent in the production environment of our customers (something like 10 different installations) than TD13. It would be cool to have some virtual images of TD 12 running properly.

Is there any update to these TD Express 12 images available (even previous working versions) ?
Or Do you have any advice to fix the bad state ?

Thx

Hi Alain,
this is strange, i run the 40GB 12.0.2.7 Express without any problems.

Did you check /var/log/messages for Teradata related info?

You could try to set the fatal amp onine using vprocmanager.

Re: Teradata DBMS is in bad state in TD Express 12 images (40GB as 1TB)

Hello Dieter !
I have unzipped from scratch the TD12 1TB image and only started the vm, dif a /etc/init.d/tpa start : same thing one vproc is in fatal state and I cannot create any table.
I have used vprocmanager to do a BOOT on vproc 1 (the one in fatal state). vproc 1 is now stucked in UTILITY state. :(

I have found in my disks an old T12 40GB image downloaded in 2009 December.
It is a TD12 0.0.0.0 (zip name is TD12_SLES10_40GB_VM.zip) : it is immediately working like a charm !

The non working TD12 1TB image was downloaded one week ago and archive name is
td-express-12.00.02.07-vm-1tb.zip

My guess is that some bad update have been done....

Now, when I want to redownload any TD express edition, -what a coincidence -, I have only a web page 'Service unavailable' :(

We may use the old working TD12.0.0.0 40GB image but we will be much more happier with a TD 12 .0.7 with 1TB limit. This mimicks much better current customer production environments.

1 Is there something I can do to fix the vproc ? I am a newbie with vprocmanager and such low level maintenance of TD DBMS. I can provide extracts of /var/log/messages (there are some events signaled by Teradata) but I don't want you to waste time on a definitely unusable virtual image.

2 Is there someone I can contact about the unavailable downloads and history of working/non working images.

Thx

Re: Teradata DBMS is in bad state in TD Express 12 images (40GB as 1TB)

Hi Alain,
maybe the download is not available because of that problem :-)

Before you BOOTed the amp, did you try to set the amp's status from FATAL to ONLINE?

A BOOTed amp needs a TABLE REBUILD.
in xdbw: start rebuild
and then: rebuild amp xxx all tables all data;

When it's finished the amp status should be ONLINE again and you need a restart.

Re: Teradata DBMS is in bad state in TD Express 12 images (40GB as 1TB)

I started Teradata 12 Express today and all queries fail because an amp is down.
vprocmanager "STATUS NOTONLINE" shows VPROC #0 as being in UTILITY mode.
I can't seem to reboot it to ONLINE - BOOT 0 says it can't boot an AMP from UTILITY mode.

Okay, failing that I just re-installed TD quick as you can say "VirtalBox virtual disk snapshots".

There's a new version (12.0.03.14) of the Linux TD12 Express available, which should fix that problem:

Re: Teradata DBMS is in bad state in TD Express 12 images (40GB as 1TB)

I downloaded from the link, but I got and TD 12.0.2.7.
Also I got the same error;

[Teradata Database] [TeraJDBC 13.00.00.20] [Error 3620] [SQLState HY000] Cannot create nonfallback table 'TERAJMS_VARIABLES' with AMP down.

Can you verify TD 12.0.3.14 is up and available?

Thanks,

Re: Teradata DBMS is in bad state in TD Express 12 images (40GB as 1TB)

I am having the same issues as the post above. And, I cannot find TD 12.0.3.14. The link sent back from the Fulfillment email points to the prior version, and has the "AMP down" issue.

I am using Teradata Express for VM (40G). Please advise.

Thank you,

Re: Teradata DBMS is in bad state in TD Express 12 images (40GB as 1TB)

Hi all,

The following worked for me...

A.

Inspect status outside vprocmanager

% vprocgdo

Issue following first, if ‘vprocmanager’ not in command path

% tdatcmd

B.

Start vrpocmanager

% vprocmanager

Inside vprocmanager:

set restart=coldwait

set <#_of_down_AMP> online

quit

Finally:

% tpareset “Restarting now”

Cheers,

Alexander.
