Setting client character set for TPT exported file

We need to export data having having Japanese/Chinese characters using TPT in an Linux based system(Ubuntu) running Teradata 15.00.

  1. What should the ideally be the session character set for the exported file?
  2. If we set this character set of the exported file to "UTF8" then all varchar column have to be defined with twice the size as defined in source. What can be the reason behind this?

Re: Setting client character set for TPT exported file

1. Are you exporting the data to write to a file? Ideally, you set the character set to one of the supported character set names. You can probably always use UTF8 or UTF16 as well.

2. For UTF8, you actually have to triple the size. That is because UTF8 characters can take up to 3 bytes per character, and TPT needs to know how much memory needs to be allocated for the buffer to hold the data.
