fastload performance

Hi

i have the Teradata Express Edition 12.0 — (the evaluation and development).

I'm using fastload to load the data into the DB.

it takes 50 minutes to load 1.5 giga of data.

I load 5.3 million record. each record consists of 34 columns, and the average record length is 300 characters long.

there are no duplicate rows in the table.

why does it take so long?

(i notice that while it's running the fastload process hardly consumes CPU)

is it due to the evaluation version ?

what is supposed to be the performance in a production installation

thanks for any help

Re: fastload performance

It's probably due to the PC the demo is running on, it's using two flat files instead of raw devices.

So the bottleneck is you disk, expecially if you load 1.5GB in a 4GB system.

thanks a lot!
Do you happen to know how fast it's supposed to run on a non demo environment?
i gess it has to do with the DB size, the servers capabilities ... but do you have a rough estimation?

Re: fastload performance

I would expect that 1.5GB to be FastLoaded in less than a minute on a single node.

Re: fastload performance

Bear in mind that a typical Teradata node this days has 8 CPU cores, 32GB RAM, and many disk spindles (which spin at 15K RPM). It can support perhaps 24 AMPs with one or more spindles per AMP for dedicated database storage. By comparison, the Teradata Expresss Edition running on a PC has only 2 AMPs, which probably share one 7200 RPM disk drive with everything else that runs on your PC.
