creation and usage of custom Postgres DB Table for data storage, from a Portlet.

Hi Guys,

Our portlet has to store a considerably large amount of data. Is there a way to "create" a custom table in the Postgres SQL DB for storing this Data. And afterwards be able to query this table and also do inserts and updates?

If this is possible, then at Portlet deployment time, is it possible to have the table created automatically, in the Postgres SQL DB, that comes with Viewpoint.

No, there is no current offering of putting custom data in the DCS. We have considered this but have concerns about capacity and data management strategies. Therefore this remains a futures consideration most likely aligned with a more dynamic storage solution. We also don't want to be creating custom storage solutions on the Viewpoint server. We recommend using an external option and calls into that from your portlet, or leveraging an NFS file mount with the custom data.

Hi Gary,

Thanks, hope to see some kind of provision to enable such functionality in Viewpoint in the Future.

When I said "considerably large amount of data", I meant for data set in MBs, and this data set is guaranteed not grow into GBs. Just like the "preferences" page/architecture allows persisting of "settings" for a portlet, there should be provision for storing and retrieving custom portlet data. Perhaps a "separate" schema with some limits on storage capacity... per portlet maybe.

We will take that feedback into consideration for the future design. Thanks.
